Chris Turnbull

Chris Turnbull

M.Eng.Sc., B.E. (Mech) (Hons) MAAS

Chris is the Principal Acoustic Engineer and founder of Sonus. Chris formed Sonus in 2002, having worked at Bassett Acoustics for seven years where he was an Associate and State Manager. This followed 5 years as an Acoustic Engineer with the Maritime Operations Division of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO).

Chris has achieved a highly regarded reputation across all sectors in his more than 30 years experience in acoustics, which has included experience with power station developments, renewable energy projects, mining and major infrastructure through to local commercial, industrial and residential planning.

Chris likes: craft gin, beef vindaloo and classic cars
Chris doesn’t like: fancy dress parties, double dipping and improper use of criteria/criterion

Simon Moore

B.E. (Mech) (Hons), MAAS, MIEAust

Simon commenced work as an Acoustic Engineer in 2001, after graduating from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Engineering in 2000. Prior to joining Sonus, Simon spent 16 years at AECOM / Bassett followed by 4 years at WSP.

Simon has over 20 years’ experience in the design and analysis of a wide range of projects across Australia. He has broad experience across a range of industries, including defence and government, heath care, education and research, commercial, residential, roads, rail, aircraft, mining, power, heavy and light industry. Simon’s significant acoustics experience extends across most aspects of environmental, architectural and building services noise and vibration.

Simon is an active member of the Australian Acoustical Society (MAAS). He spent two years as President (2019-2020) and currently serves as the Vice President on the Federal Council, and is the long-standing Treasurer of the South Australian Division (since 2010). He is also member of the Institute of Engineers Australia (MIEAust).

Simon likes: travelling with his family in their caravan, Coopers Pale Ale, Adelaide Crows, jet skiing and dirt bike riding
Simon doesn’t like: coffee and cheese (weird hey!) and when his children misbehave (which is a common occurrence)

Adam Cook

B.E. (Mech) (Hons), MAAS, MIEAust

Adam joined the Sonus team as an Associate in 2023. Prior to joining Sonus, Adam spent 8 years at AECOM and over 4 years at WSP.

Adam has a broad range of experience in environmental noise, including acoustic analysis and assessment of projects associated with transport noise, energy production and storage, water treatment, and construction.

Adam is an experienced participant in acoustic stakeholder engagement sessions including connecting with residents at community meetings concerning road upgrades, water infrastructure and power generation projects.

Adam is an active member of the Australian Acoustic Society and is currently Secretary of the South Australian Division. He is also a member of the Institute of Engineers Australia (MIEAust).

Adam likes: Fast cars, Farmers Union Iced Coffee, dad jokes and Bunnings
Adam doesn’t like: How expensive fast cars are, running and heatwaves

Byron Holmes

B.E. (MechT) (Hons)

Byron joined Sonus in May 2019 after more than seven years at the South Australian Environment Protection Authority (EPA) as a Project Engineer (Noise) and almost two years as an Acoustic Engineer at Vipac.

Byron is involved in the assessment of all acoustics related projects across the fields of environmental noise and building acoustics.

Byron likes: Craft beer, hiking, coffee and live music
Byron doesn’t like: Rain, bananas, getting up early, the middle seat on an aeroplane

Rhys Carpenter

B.E. (Mech) (Hons), BCS (Hons)

Rhys joined Sonus in December 2019 after graduating from the University of Adelaide with an Honours degree in both Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.

Rhys is involved in the assessment of all acoustics in environmental noise and building sectors.

Rhys likes: reading books, wood-fired pizza, and video games
Rhys doesn’t like: seafood, cold feet, and creasing the corner of pages in books

Jack Turnbull

Jack joined Sonus in October 2021 having previously worked at ASC Pty Ltd (formerly known as the Australian Submarine Corporation) for 4 years. Jack has an Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Adelaide.

Jack works on all aspects of acoustic engineering and has a strong interest in vibration.

Jack likes:  craft beer, supporting his favourite sports teams, chess
Jack doesn’t like: mushrooms, smudges on his glasses and slow internet

Tim Aplin

B.E. (Mech) (Hons)

Tim joined Sonus in January 2021 after graduating from the University of Adelaide with an Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Tim is involved in the assessment of acoustics in environmental, construction and industrial noise projects.

Tim likes: Gravel & road cycling, SA wine, Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens, puppies, terrible 90s action movies
Tim doesn’t like: Yappy dogs, noisy neighbours

Stefan John

Stefan joined Sonus in January 2021 after graduating from the University of Adelaide with a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Stefan is involved in the assessment of acoustics in environmental, construction and industrial noise projects.

Stefan likes: Cricket, dance, philosophical conversations, public speaking, studying theology and soccer
Stefan doesn’t like: Green vegetables, traffic, long words and winter
